The only reliable way I can tell which app is active is the traffic lights. Unless you have the apps right next to each other, this is difficult to notice. All it does is dim background windows and your desktop, and keeps the front, active. The apps toolbar is just slightly darker in the inactive window. OS X: HazeOver makes it easy to focus on the task at hand, even if you have multiple windows open on your Mac. Depending on the background, this can be impossible to see. There is no drop shadow on inactive windows.
